A continuous observational time motion study analyzed and evaluated nursing work.

We used the Omaha System to describe nursing interventions and TimeCaT to record workflow.

Findings

57 Interventions

structured using the Omaha System and TimeCaT, were refined and validated through a multi-phase, multi-method nursing home study

Multitasking for 1/3 of time

with 65 interventions performed and 28 location changes in an hour, showed significant time pressure for nurses in nursing homes

70% of medication management interventions

were multitasked, impacted time duration of preparation and documentation of medications

Compliance with hand hygiene for 30% of time

were not associated with workload, measured in the number of interventions performed per hour
